Society Expeditions

Editor's Note: This company is no longer in business.

Established in 1974 as the Society for the Preservation of Archaeological Monuments, this company began life offering excursions to Easter Island. The profits of those first expeditions were donated to aid the restoration of the great statues. Since then it has expanded to offer trips to destination throughout the world.

Renamed Society Expeditions in 1976, the company added new destinations but has continued the tradition that launched it, a dedication to preserving the destinations it visits. Conservation is central to theme of all its expeditions and the leaders are all experienced naturalists and experts in their respective fields.

The company’s new ship, World Discover, is designed for both luxury and as a state-of-the-art expedition vessel. Passengers experience the thrill of adventure in remote areas with the comfort and service of a luxury cruise ship. Daily Zodiac boat excursions are organized around travelers’ interests and allow close-up exploration not normally afforded to cruise ship passengers.

For the 2003- 2004 season, Society Expeditions is offering itineraries to Alaska and the Russian Far East, including Beringia, the Crossroads of Continents, Bridging the Bering Strait and Around the Ring of Fire Spring Bird Migration. In the South Pacific, tours include In the Wake of the Bounty, Lost Islands of Micronesia & Melanesia, Pearls of the South Pacific and excursions to Antarctica.

The company’s web site offers detailed information on its current trips, the expedition vessels, what to expect from your trip and a detailed history of the company and it values. It’s a great introduction to what could surely be the trip of a lifetime.
