Cruising provides a great way to see a variety of
locations, without having to repack. Just look at the phenomenon of the big
floating Vegas type ships we see hyped everywhere. While I have been there and
done that — once many years ago — now my ideal experience, or so I imagine and
am dying to try, is a slow relaxing meander down a quaint canal or river.
Drinking in the scenery and getting a view of cities and towns from a totally
different perspective. A recent quick excursion on the Chicago River, can give
me a view of the city most tourists never see.
Of course not all cruises are calm and soothing,
crossing Drake's Passage to Antarctica can be quite a rollicking experience, or
so I read...but for the most part, a cruise is a relaxing and great way to and
get in touch with the region you are passing through.
Some tour hosts even organize special lecturers
on specific departures so you can enjoy a customized thematic cruise such as a
journey in Mozart’s footsteps, an architectural and historic trip through
Russia’s imperial cities or a garden cruise to correspond with Holland’s tulip
festival.
This month’s hosts cover a wide range to options
from the farthest reaches of the world, to the great rivers of Europe, China’s
soon to be gone Three Gorges to our own backyard. But wherever the journey or
the type of ship, a cruise for even a few hours, lets you experience a
destination from a totally different view point, one you’ll never get from the
land and certainly not from the window of a bus!

| Why
We Like Them: Cruceros Australis provides a great journey for travelers
looking to experience spectacular scenery of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, in
comfort. Two separate ships offer 3 and 4 day journeys deep into the fjords,
Beagle Channel and Glacier Alley. Daily excursions to explore landscape and
wildlife sites, allows for up-close and personal contact with the marine life
that thrives in this remote region. On-board lectures prepare travelers for the
experiences to come. For the luckiest, weather permitting, the ships will round
Cape Horn, a dream for many a mariner fan. |

islands in style. These cruises accommodate 30-40 passengers and trips depart

Yacht Vacations Worldwide |
|
Location: Worldwide |
| Specialty: Yacht Charters |
| Why
We Like Them: A great way to customize your floating
accommodation is to custom charter a yacht. Very knowledgeable about the
Captains and crew, Yacht Vacations World-Wide can suit the traveler to the
Captain for the best possible holiday imaginable. Like French food and wine,
they have an ex-wine merchant that makes it a point to share fabulous bottle at
diner. Or perhaps a more typical water activity — scuba, one Captain is an
underwater photographer and of course all Captains know the best secluded
beaches and wild beach bars, so no matter your activity needs, a chartered yacht
can fit the bill. You can also join some scheduled trips "cabin only" so there
is something for everyone. |

| Specialty:
Cruises on the Great Lakes and St Lawrence Seaway |

We Like Them: Great Lakes Cruise Company provides a fabulous way to
experience the waterways defining the USA/Canadian border. A specially built
replica steamboat transports passengers back to the turn of the 20th
century for a cruise along the mighty St. Lawrence. From Kingston to Quebec,
experience the past and visit No. America’s only walled city, “Old Quebec.” Or
choose to view New England’s Fall Foliage from a floating perspective. Of

Antarctic Horizons |
|
Location: Antarctic |
| Specialty: Expedition cruising to the Antarctic Peninsula |
| Why
We Like Them: Two ships especially built for polar oceanographic
research and refitted for passengers, you know this is the
real way to experience Antarctica. Along with the typical
zodiac excursion, the company also offers the adventurous
traveler the chance for some serious activities; iceberg and
rock climbing, cross-country skiing, snow camping and even
sea kayaking are all possible. Definitely not for the casual
tourist. |
